When will “we” ever learn?
Who is the “we” in the story about the failing Baltimore City school system.
Students: We despair for the students who by any measure are not proficient in basic skills. Regardless, they are processed through our city school system. That factory accepts these raw inputs and turns them into end products - graduates! The quality of the finished goods, and the journey itself get a failing grade for too many.
Administration: The people running this $1,000,000,000+ business aren’t learning from their mistakes. I’d wager if we looked at the administration, we’d see more and more resources going to management and less to teachers and the kids. If that is the case, we despair that there isn’t a real incentive to change.
Citizens: We the people who accept this failure without questioning what is happening and demanding change also don’t seem to be learning much. Same old same old, with new programs every 5 years to establish new benchmarks to obscure the failures. An ever changing grading on the curve.
This is a desperate situation being met with non-chalance. Where are the emergency measures? Why can’t we try other things? Maybe we just will never learn.
There are many of us unwilling to accept these results.. Watch KJ McKenzie and Evie Harris grade the school system. We ALL need to get on board, raise our voices, and demand change now.
